A lot of companies are jumping on the bandwagon for better living conditions of animals. IHOP is the latest company under attack for not willing to change their methods of producing eggs. The hens are left in there never to get out. The hens can barely move around and can barely spread their wings. Birds fight and there is nothing they can do. Birds are stuck in the wires of the cages, unable to access food or water. Workers do not care about the birds that are stuck, one bird in the video has its lower beak ripped off due to worker negligence when being removed. The workers simply break their necks if chickens are injured. The hens are crammed in cages 6 rows high so workers need carts to view the higher levels. Sometimes workers are not keen on finding the dead birds, so the body sits there and rot. There are some that are almost decomposed, they are completely flat in the cage from being in there so long.
The Humane Society is actively pushing IHOP to change their methods, and is showing the world what happens to these poor hens. Over 265 million hens are confines in battery cages in the US alone. No socialy responsible company should support these methods of animal cruelty. Please watch the video, because it will show you what happens and will leave you with no doubt that these practices cannot be tolerated.
The Hygiene of the eggs in this facility is at great risk since newly-laid eggs are rolling over rotting carcasses. – Ian Duncan, PhD
Many of these birds had been long dead as evidence by their mummified state… This would take weeks to develop – Ned Buyukmihci, DVM
It is disconcerting that live hens must share cages with dead birds – Sara Shields, PhD
