This really just upsets me down to my very core. Strawberry farmers in Florida right now have an early crop, which is great right? One would think so, but it is not the case. Because they have so much of a crop right now the market is over saturated with Strawberries, which has lowered the price in the market from roughly $1.00 a pound to $0.25 cents a pound. So what are they doing with all of these strawberries if they aren’t selling them? The farmers are literally destroying them. They are doing this because it is cheaper than sending them off to the market.
One farmer claims “Well we have to make a living too”. I can understand this, but at the same time why the F$&% don’t you give it away to starving people rather than destroying it!!? Farmers are worried that people on their land will get hurt, and then will hold them responsible. Have them sign something then stating that the land owners are not responsible!
I can think of one reason for this behavior… pride. I can think of another reason… greed. People are quick to take offense to sticky situations, and they make it someone else’s problem when something doesn’t go right. “Why should all of this food that doesn’t make me any money go to people who don’t deserve it?” I wonder if that is the thought. People protect their “trash” way too much, even if that trash is for someone else a pot of gold. I can tell you what… buying strawberries from Florida might not seem so tempting to me anymore. Why support this type of behavior?
This just sickens me…
